
      

      # Separating Knowledge from Language: Towards More Factually Accurate LLMs

      I was analyzing outputs from one of my training runs on my model a few months ago and it was frustrating. The model was showing good signs of metacognitive awareness yet still produced factual errors with disturbing confidence. The model correctly flagged its uncertainty in some cases but continued to hallucinate in others, weaving together plausible-sounding but entirely fictional information.

     This insight led me down a research path I've become increasingly convinced is critical for developing truly trustworthy AI: the architectural separation of factual knowledge from linguistic generation.

     Perhaps the most fascinating challenge is maintaining the creative, flexible language generation that makes LLMs so powerful while imposing appropriate factual constraints. Early experiments suggest that separation doesn't have to mean limitation—in fact, it can enable more confident creativity within bounded domains.
     
     The dream that keeps me motivated in this work is creating language models that not only generate beautiful prose but reason about and validate their own factual claims—moving closer to true epistemic agents that we can genuinely trust in critical applications.
     
     The architectural separation of knowledge and language isn't just a technical tweak—it's a fundamental reconceptualization of how AI systems should represent and communicate what they know. And I believe it may be essential for building the reliable, trustworthy systems we need for the future.
